The Quest to Become Recovered is a journey of faith which begins with understanding the good news, or the Gospel, which lies at the heart of the Christian faith. To fully understand this message, it’s crucial to consider the truth as set forth in the Bible.
In reality, sin is what separates us from God, originating from the fall of man in the Garden of Eden (Genesis Ch. 3) when mankind rebelled against God. However, despite this separation, God’s love provided a path of reconciliation and redemption through His son, Jesus Christ.
At the heart of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the reality that sin (missing the mark of God's glory as shown in the image of Christ) I.E. the manifestations of active addiction and the life-controlling/self-destructive behaviors and patterns we exhibit in our lives (which also effects the lives of others around us) CANNOT be cured by simply changing outward behaviors. We need a Savior. God in His unfailing love sent us one...Jesus Christ.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
“...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
CONGRATULATIONS! If you have sincerely turned away from your sin, put your faith in Christ, and called on His name to save you, then...according to the Bible, you’re a Christian! You have just enlisted into the Army of the Lord! You have taken your first step toward freedom!
Let's take the next step...
Jesus is the central figure of the Bible. Jesus is the embodiment of God's love. Jesus is the only way to obtain salvation. Jesus is the Supreme Commander of the Army of the Lord.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ [Jesus] died for us.” Romans 5:8
“Christ died for our sins… He was buried…He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8–9
Salvation through Jesus Christ is a profound and personal experience.
It’s about acknowledging our sins, embracing God’s forgiveness, and entering into a personal relationship with Jesus as the Lord of our lives.
1. "Get sick and tired of being sick and tired."
Recognize your sinful nature and the need for forgiveness and the turning away from your sin. Admit defeat and have a sincere desire to change.
"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3:19
2. "Get saved." (Jesus as Savior)
Trust in what Jesus has done to save (rescue) you from sin through His life, death, burial and resurrection. He is coming back for you.
Surrender as much of yourself as you can to as much of Christ as you understand.
"If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9
3. "Get serious." (Jesus as Lord)
Receive Christ. Allow the work of Jesus to transform your life from the inside out.
Suit up and show up. One day at a time. One moment at a time if need be.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12
"Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I have allowed sin and false gods (idols) to come between myself and the love You have for me. I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that You lived for me. I believe that You died for me. You died for MY sins. I believe that You were buried in that tomb and rose from the dead on that third day. I believe that You will return for me one day. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart, my soul and my life. I surrender my will to You. I will trust and follow You as my Savior and my Lord all the days of my life. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen."
If you have sincerely turned away from your sin, put your faith in Christ, and called on His name to save you, then...according to the Bible, you’re a Christian! You have just enlisted into the Army of the Lord! Congratulations!
*Remember, it's not the words of the prayer that save you; it's the repentance and faith in your heart that lay hold of salvation.
